Languages

In NSW high schools, languages is a key learning area.

LOTE (Languages Other Than English)

Overview of Faculty

Italian is the official language of Italy, San Marino and the Vatican City. It is one of the four official languages of Switzerland and one of the eleven official languages of the European Union.

The study of Japanese is particularly important to Australians, both culturally and economically. Japan is Australia’s leading partner and there are significant cultural ties between Australia and Japan.

The learning of languages is shown to increase metalinguistic awareness and enhance general cognitive development. Students develop communication skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking), focus on languages as systems and gain insights into the relationship between language and culture, leading to lifelong personal, educational and vocational benefits.
